Therapists for college students near New York University
Hi! I’m Sarah. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to "have it all figured out" while navigating the ups and downs of college life, you’re in the right place. Whether you’re a New Yorker studying away from home or a Virginian trying to find your footing, I’m here to help you manage the transition. I’ve spent the last three years helping people navigate life’s biggest shifts. I know that being a student isn't just about grades—it’s about managing relationships, setting boundaries with family, and figuring out who you are when the old labels don't seem to fit anymore. My Approach: I don’t believe in "one size fits all" therapy. My style is warm, direct, and collaborative. I bring a grounded, practical perspective to our sessions (with a touch of wit) to help you move from feeling stuck to feeling capable. I specialize in: Relationship Navigation: Modern dating, roommate friction, and family dynamics. Anxiety & Perfectionism: Silencing the "not enough" voice. Life Transitions: Moving, career pivot anxiety, and identity shifts. I offer a space where you can be completely yourself—no "clinical mask" required. Let’s work together to build a toolkit that actually works for your life, not just your syllabus.
Every individual carries a unique story, and as a therapist-in-training, I am deeply honored to walk alongside you on your journey. I approach therapy with a blend of curiosity, empathy, and respect, aiming to create a safe and nurturing space where you feel comfortable exploring the complexities of your inner world. My therapeutic style is integrative, blending Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, person-centered approaches, and trauma-informed techniques to tailor our work to your specific needs and circumstances. I have experience working with a range of concerns, including but not limited to relationship-related issues, sexual trauma, anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders. I understand that life’s challenges can sometimes feel overwhelming, and seeking support is a courageous and important step. I am here to listen, support, and guide you through these difficult times. Together, we will embark on a collaborative journey to understand your thoughts and feelings, identify patterns that may no longer serve you, and develop effective coping strategies that empower you to move forward with resilience and confidence. At the heart of my practice is a commitment to creating a warm, inviting environment where you feel genuinely seen and understood. I strive to offer a space free of judgment, where you can safely express your emotions and share your story. By integrating evidence-based techniques with a deep, compassionate understanding of your unique experiences, my goal is to help you unlock your full potential and live a life that feels authentic and fulfilling. No matter where you are on your therapeutic path, I am here to provide unwavering support, encouragement, and guidance as you grow, heal, and transform. Allison Sugarman is a therapist-in-training at Sol Health. Sol Health is a digital health startup that offers $30 therapy to GenZs by connecting them with therapists-in-training accruing clinical hours.
I believe that each of our stories are equally sacred as they are unique and see therapy as an opportunity to cultivate curiosity for ourselves, let go of self-judgement, and create meaningful change. I utilize an embodied approach rooted in Gestalt Therapy and don't shy away from bringing humor, play and creativity to the therapeutic process. Though my experience ranges across many areas, I gravitate towards helping clients work through Inner Child Healing, codependency, perfectionism, relational trauma, multicultural identity and relationship issues. I also work with couples seeking to deepen intimacy, trust and communication.
It's been an endless search for a therapist who really gets you. Someone who can dive into your problems without making you feel you have to compartmentalize important parts of your life. Someone who can be a safe sounding board whatever comes up. I want you to know it's ok to show up however you're feeling that day. It's ok to open up at your own pace. I will be right here beside you as you discover unique pathways towards resilience, fulfillment and fun. I center the needs of non-binary & other LGBTQ people in my practice. I help people navigate: stress management and resilience; emotional impact of chronic illness; family of origin issues; and enhancing fulfillment in all sorts of relationships through increased self-knowledge, communication, and collaboration. I believe therapy is most effective when it is a dynamic, collaborative process that integrates the wisdom of our body, mind and spiritual self. I use various approaches including Brainspotting, Heartmath, and mindfulness-based somatic therapy, that allow us to access the deep healing potential of brain, body and mind. I partner with my clients to improve understanding and mastery of themselves, the challenges they face, both interpersonally, intra psychically, and in a larger societal context. I work well with people from all ethnicities, backgrounds, and sexual orientations. I love my work and look forward to collaborating with clients to achieve the goals set by them.
My ideal clients are students who have a tremendous reservoir of resources in managing their school-work life balance, despite having experienced a traumatic incident in their life. These students are often those who have experienced a sexual assault and noticed that it has made it difficult for them to stay on top of their workload, connect with others, and more. Other students I enjoy working with are those who are explored their identity in terms of sexual orientation, intimate relationships, and gender identity. These types of students are often very insightful and want to share their thoughts on a safe and non-judgmental atmosphere.
