Welcome to FRESH Psychotherapy! Our practice specialties include treatment of problems related to foster care, adoption, family and other interpersonal relationships, issues with attachment, anxiety, depression, and complex trauma. Therapists on staff have extensive experience working with individuals and families experiencing issues related to acute and chronic life stressors.
My clinical work is grounded in disability justice & the neurodiversity paradigm. Taken together, these movements teach us that diversity of bodies & brains are essential to the human experience. I specialize in complex trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship dynamics, identity exploration & transitional stress. I have a particular passion for working with performers, including dancers, actors & other creatives, as well as athletes. I approach therapy from a relational psychodynamic perspective, meaning I help clients understand how past relationships & early experiences shape their current emotional well-being, relationships & sense of self. My commitment to intersectionality, accessibility & autonomy means that I tailor my approach to each individual’s unique identities & desires.
I offer an affirming, safe space for people who identify as POC, LGBTQIA+, and neurodivergent to explore their identities and deconstruct their own narrative within the larger lens of society. I treat both individuals, and couples, ranging from ages 18-40+. I bring warmth, creativity, and a sense of humor into the room, because therapy doesn’t have to feel heavy all the time. If you’re ready to feel a little lighter—and a lot less alone—let’s get started.
I use a warm and collaborative approach grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help my clients navigate life transitions, identity development, and manage symptoms of anxiety, depression, and OCD. My goal is to help each person leave sessions with greater insight, practical tools, and an increased confidence in themselves and their ability to reach their goals. My therapeutic approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I believe meaningful change happens when people feel safe, supported, and empowered to better understand themselves and who they want to become. I especially enjoy working with adolescents and young adults as they navigate one of life's most transformative periods. I have experience supporting individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, OCD and OCD-related symptoms, and life transitions. Whether you are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or trying to make sense of where you are in life, I strive to create a space where you feel heard, understood, and comfortable being your authentic self. My style is both validating and gently challenging. After we have established trust and safety, I am not afraid to ask difficult questions that encourage deeper reflection and growth. My hope is that every session leaves you with something tangible—whether it is a new strategy, meaningful insight, different perspective, or practical tool you can carry with you outside of therapy. My goal is to help you build resilience, trust yourself more deeply, and feel more equipped to navigate whatever comes next.
I provide a comfortable, non-judgmental, and multicultural lens to ensure the ability of tackling each issue in a safe and healthy way. I specialize in working with teenagers, college students, and the LGBT Community, and I also focus on treating ADHD, Anxiety, BPD, Trauma, and General Life Stressors.
College can be a great time to start exploring relationships and even making long-term bonds. However, the stresses of college life can challenge even the most loving of relationships. I assist couples to identify communication and intimacy issues that prevent them from connecting both physically and emotionally. There is no size fits all. Thus, I seek to collaborate with my clients to co-create a therapeutic experience that creates the trust necessary to do deeper work.
I have done psychotherapy with graduate students, especially around relationship, bereavement (particularly early parental loss), anxiety and fertility issues for over twenty years. I believe that most emotional pain stems from both difficult life circumstances and how we perceive those events. I work in an open, warm and empathically challenging way to help people better explore, understand and wrestle with the issues that are keeping them from finding more peace, joy, freedom and fulfillment.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a private practice in midtown Manhattan. When I decided to go back to school for a master’s degree, I chose social work because I felt strongly about its foundational belief that focus should be on both a person and their environment. During graduate school at Fordham University I saw many appealing paths I could continue on after graduation. While both macro and micro levels of practice are extremely important, I felt best suited for work with individuals on a deeper level. I wanted to further my education and went on to complete the four-year postgraduate training program in Adult Psychoanalysis and Comprehensive Psychotherapy from The National Institute for the Psychotherapies. Prior to private practice I worked with a diverse population in various clinics throughout New York City. In addition to private practice I have been guest faculty at the Training Institute for Mental Health and taught a course on Eating Disorders. In March 2020, I completed a post master’s program in Spirituality and Social Work at New York University.
I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker committed to helping you tackle your college daily life challenges and stress. I'm Puerto Rican and I'm fluent in Spanish and English. I am an advocate for the holistic health and overall quality of life of my clients. I believe that humans are dynamic and full of potential. It is never too late to create effective change! My therapeutic practice is based on my personal belief in inclusivity, human connection, and, human resiliency. I believe all people deserve to be seen and heard. As your therapist, I am committed to creating a safe space where you can better understand yourself and the world around you. Using psychodynamic approaches we can tap into not only how you can cope with life’s challenges but also, design a plan to help you feel empowered to create the life you desire. I am also experienced in working with issues such as depression, anxiety low self-esteem, grief, race, relationships, and mental health.
Many of the students I work with are used to pushing through, even when they're overwhelmed. They may be questioning their career path, struggling with perfectionism, procrastination, people pleasing, or feeling like they're falling behind while everyone else seems to have life figured out. Others are navigating ADHD, anxiety, grief, relationship challenges, identity exploration, or family stress. As a college professor and psychologist, I understand the unique pressures students face and help them better understand the patterns that keep them stuck, build confidence in their decisions, and develop a stronger sense of who they are both in and outside of the classroom.
I work with clients who have experienced trauma, are navigating difficult family and relationship dynamics, or are looking to better manage their anxiety, depression, or chronic stress. I have experience working with diverse client populations and the LGBTQIA+ community. We will work together to establish a treatment plan that fits your needs, and pursue it in a collaborative environment where you feel heard, supported, and affirmed.
I am a very warm, approachable, and down-to-earth practitioner who has been complimented for my ability to make all people feel comfortable while sharing their stories. My areas of specialization include affirmative care for LGBTQ+ and gender-expansive teens and adults as well as management of stress, anxiety, depression, and adjustment to life transitions in adults and adolescents. I am also the Director of Social Work at a high school in New York City where I have worked for 12 years. I deeply value the relationship built between therapist and client, and I rely on it as we dive deep into challenging topics. While I believe the therapist and client relationship alone can be a uniquely healing force, I also infuse elements of many therapeutic modalities into my work depending on the client's individual needs. When working with adolescents, I find it vital to include caregivers in the conversation and the work.

Therapy is an opportunity for you to explore, reflect upon, and work to overcome issues or circumstances in your life with someone who can be objective yet very much invested in you becoming stronger, healthier, and happier. Counseling as a process is meant to challenge you to face and work through any difficulties you are experiencing because of either past, present, or future concerns. It is typically a weekly meeting between you and your counselor that gives you the space to have an open dialogue about what you are facing, confront your feelings in a more honest way, or to decide how you want to approach solving a problem in your life. The length of counseling is unique for each individual, depending upon on your needs and goals. Essentially, the counseling process is driven by you. We have two therapists at our facility, Bushra Husain, DSW LCSW, Maryum Khwaja, LCSW.
I know that life can be challenging, and I’m here to support you every step of the way. I’m a board-certified, Mount Sinai-trained adult psychiatrist, and my passion is helping individuals like you achieve optimal mental well-being. I believe that everyone’s journey is unique, so I’m dedicated to crafting a personalized treatment plan that fits your specific needs and goals. I take a holistic approach to mental health, considering not just the mind and body but also the cultural and social factors that shape our experiences. This is especially important to me in the South Asian community, where discussions around mental health can feel daunting. I strive to create a safe, welcoming space where you can express your concerns.
