Therapists for college students near University of Colorado Boulder
Hello and welcome! I'm a licensed clinical social worker and licensed addictions counselor providing virtual therapy to BIPOC individuals and families in Colorado who are navigating anxiety, depression, and trauma. I received my master's degree in social work and bachelor's degree in psychology from MSU Denver and my professional background includes over 10 years of experience working with BIPOC adolescents, families, and adults in various settings. Clients would describe me as down-to-earth, grounded, validating, and easy to talk to. I value creating a therapeutic relationship that feels genuine and supportive while also encouraging growth and self-reflection. I'm trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy which helps with exploring emotions, attachment patterns, and relationship dynamics to create deeper emotional connection and security; EMDR which allows us to process difficult or traumatic experiences that may continue to impact the present; and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy which provides practical tools for managing emotions, navigating stress, improving relationships, and building resilience.
College can bring a lot: new freedom, pressure to succeed, and the stress of figuring out who you are and where you are headed. Many of the students I work with feel weighed down by anxiety, burnout, overthinking, imposter syndrome, or the pressure to be perfect. Others are coping with ADHD, past/current trauma, anxiety and social anxiety or just the everyday stress of classes, relationships, and big transitions. With 12 years of experience working in university counseling centers, I have a deep understanding of the unique challenges of college and graduate students' lives. In our work together, you will find a supportive space to talk honestly about what is on your mind, learn coping tools to manage stress, and feel more grounded and confident. My goal is to help you feel less alone and more able to handle the challenges of college life.
My name is Sarah Lucas, and I'm a licensed professional counselor in Denver, Colorado. I work with adolescents and adults experiencing a range of issues including anxiety, depression, transitions, pre- and post-partum difficulties, and relationship struggles. I utilize multiple therapies including CBT, DBT, and ACT to create a treatment plan that suits each client's unique needs. I'm a practical therapist, so I want to give you strategies to use outside of the therapy session in your daily life- as well as offering a listening and understanding ear. I hope you leave every session with me feeling empowered, supported, and more compassionate towards yourself. I want to help you navigate transitions and design your life with courage and confidence. We'll open up, talk goals, make plans, and work together to help you feel good. Along the way, I'll be here beside you to remind you that you are wonderful, just as you are.

Many people come to therapy feeling stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or exhausted from carrying the same stress, grief, relationship struggles, or emotional pain for far too long. You may feel frustrated that despite your efforts, the same patterns keep showing up in your relationships, communication feels difficult, burnout has taken over, or life no longer feels sustainable in the way it once did. Some clients come in feeling anxious, emotionally drained, lost in a major life transition, or unsure how to reconnect with themselves or the people they love. If this sounds like you, I'm glad you're here. I specialize in working with young adults and couples experiencing relationship distress, emotional disconnection, attachment injury, burnout, betrayal trauma, separation, and major life transitions. I also support women navigating pregnancy, postpartum adjustment, identity shifts, and the emotional challenges that can come with these changes. I believe therapy should be a collaborative process rooted in honesty, connection, and compassion. Using a person-centered, attachment-based approach, I work alongside clients to explore the emotions and patterns keeping them stuck. Together, we work toward healing, healthier relationships, and greater overall balance, hope, and fulfillment.
I strive to foster personal growth and understanding in order to heal from past wounds and resolve current psychological distress. I do this by providing a safe and non-judgmental space where people of all different backgrounds can feel comfortable sharing their struggles. It is a privilege to walk alongside you during difficult times and see you overcome your current obstacles. I seek understanding of your experience through questions, exploration, and taking on a learner’s perspective. Although I am well versed in mental health disorders and treatment, I see you as the expert of yourself. This is your life and your story. I want to collaborate with you to find the best solutions for you. I will offer tools, strategies, and skills. Most importantly, I offer a place for you to be heard and understood. Together we will learn what works best for you. My goal is for you to leave therapy feeling confident in trusting yourself and your ability to handle what life presents.
I often work with students who are dealing with anxiety, school stress, family conflict, or feeling overwhelmed by expectations. You might feel like you’re trying to keep everything together while struggling on the inside. In therapy, we’ll slow things down, make sense of what you’re experiencing, and develop skills that help you feel more grounded in yourself and supported in life. I also encourage parent coaching sessions to help caregivers learn tools to better support their child’s emotional growth.

Does the idea of doing improv comedy make you feel nervous, but you’re intrigued? Do you like to laugh? Within a small, supportive group of 4-7 people that meets for eight weeks, you will learn how to be more compassionate towards yourself so that you can feel calmer and more connected to other people, more often! You will practice your self-compassion skills in real-time through tailored improv comedy exercises that are designed to support you on the path toward increasing your self-acceptance and self-confidence. At its core, improv comedy helps you to take risks, make mistakes, and not take yourself so seriously. We will laugh a lot : ) Past clients have said… “I always felt nervous to go, but felt like something had been released after each session." “I love the space to talk about what we are dealing with. I have never been actually excited to go to therapy until finding this group.” "The play and improv was beneficial for my perfectionism because I got to experience just diving into things." I work best with people who are curious about understanding themselves and the experiences that have shaped them. Many of the students and clients I support are navigating anxiety, stress, relationships, identity, career questions, major life decisions, or feeling unsure about their next steps. In addition to being a counselor, I am a psychology and career development educator. I regularly work with college students exploring their strengths, values, goals, and the question many of us face during transitions: “Who am I, and where do I want to go from here?” My approach is collaborative and human. Together, we explore your story with curiosity rather than criticism, better understand patterns, reconnect with your strengths and values, and build practical tools to help you move forward with more intention.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I specialize in working with adolescents and young adults who struggle with emotional dysregulation that can lead to impulsive behaviors or avoidance. My work focuses on helping clients develop emotional awareness, increase psychological flexibility, and cultivate self-compassion while building practical tools for meaningful, lasting change. I bring over ten years of experience in community mental health, two years spent in a full-time position at Western Colorado University’s Counseling Center, where I provided individual counseling to students. As both a former WCU therapist and an alumni of the same school, I have a deep appreciation for the unique challenges students in a small mountain community can face and the support they deserve. My therapeutic approach is integrative and holistic, drawing from evidence-based modalities including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). I also incorporate principles from interpersonal neurobiology and attachment theory to create a supportive, grounded, and collaborative environment. I am trained in EMDR and can integrate this more structured approach to trauma processing if requested or recommended. I’m passionate about this work because I believe in the healing power of the therapeutic relationship and in every person’s capacity for growth. Together, we can create a space that fosters resilience, insight, and meaningful change.

I work with you to not just understand what's going on, but also to develop tools to help. Tools to stop panic attacks, tools to manage depression, tools to get organized and figure out what you want in life. We work together to see what works reliably for you. In addition to talking things through, in session and between sessions sometimes you might be writing, sometimes trying a challenging behavior change, sometimes engaging in mindfulness, and sometimes using visualizations. My aim is for you to feel better, and to know what to do to keep feeling better or help yourself if problems resurface. And I try to work efficiently with you, so you are back to your life (and ending therapy) as soon as makes sense for you. Give me a call to set up an initial (free) conversation, at 303-870-9195.
